Interest in motorcycles increases | The Augusta Chronicle
Tom Clancy, the owner of the Augusta Triumph/Ducati dealership, said interest in motorcycles because of their fuel efficiency has been on the rise since 2005. Gas consciousness rarely acts as the single driving factor in a customer’s purchase, he said, but it has come up in conversation more and more as gas prices climb.

Data show risk highest for new motorcycle riders – WSJ.com
ALBANY, N.Y. — Jeff Foley got a motorcycle for his 40th birthday last year followed by the weekend training course that gave him a New York license. Within the first few months, the 450-pound, low-slung cruising bike fell over twice while he was riding. The chief injury was Foley’s pride. The first time, he was pulling out slowly and turning in a parking lot. The second time his wife was on the back.”Both times were just as I was starting to get a little bit cocky,” Foley said. “I’m exceptionally fortunate that I dropped it at a standstill, not 50 or 60 miles an hour.”The most dangerous time for motorcyclists by far is their first year, peaking in the first month, safety studies show. Another study suggests that licensing courses that fast-track the time it takes to get on the road don’t lower crash risks and may even raise them.

Motorcycle sales decline in 2011
The latest figures for sales of new motorcycle and scooter show an overall drop of 2.2% in 2011 compared to 2010. Overall the market has moved away from large motorcycles towards smaller motorcycles and scooters, often used for commuting. This trend is reflected with the biggest sales growth of the year coming from the 51-125cc sector.Sue Robinson, Director of the Retail Motor Industry Federation which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK commented “With the cost of fuel, insurance premiums and rail fares all increasing, the possibility of commuting on an efficient motorcycle or scooter is obviously appealing. In London this is combined with the benefit of not having to pay congestion charges and being able to park for just £1 per day.”In 2011, of the 18 brands of motorcycle which sold over 1,000 units, six of these manufacturers were Chinese. This reflects both the price-driven nature of the market as well as the importance of the internet to introduce new brands to the public. With people’s disposable income shrinking, the demand for larger motorcycles has noticeably dropped, as they are often considered a non-essential purchase. Sue Robinson continued, “Overall, 2011 has been an extremely challenging period for many motorcycle dealers, we look to the Government to continue to support the industry, reduce congestion and improve the UK’s green credentials.”
